AL ARTHUR

The only son born to Allen L. and Alice May Tedesco Arthur, Allen L.

Arthur, Jr. was born on December 9, 1948. He has three younger sisters, Marlene and Darlene (twins) and Eileen

(the youngest). Spending his childhood and adolescent years in New Orleans, he graduated in 1966 from Cor Jesu

High School.

His musical endeavors began in the 4" grade when he started playing the clarinet. In 1964, Al saved enough money

by working part time to buy his first guitar. After 6 months, he joined his I" band called, "Dunc's Honky Tonks" which

was a Dixieland band for youngsters run by an old timer named Warren Duncan. But at that time Al was more

interested in playing popular music. He also started learning how to play piano and bass guitar.

Al has been a professional musician for over 47 years playing upright bass, bass guitar, guitar, keyboards and vocals.

He has played numerous gigs on the Westbank and also played for local artists like Irma Thomas, Frankie Ford,

Marva Wright, Ernie K Doe, Oliver Morgan, and Roland Stone.

In 1965 Al and others formed a band called "Tommy Dawn & The Sunsets

that had moderate success. In July of 1969 Al was drafted into the Army for 2 years. After returning to New Orleans in

1971 he began playing bass guitar with various bands around town while completing his education and graduating

from the University of New Orleans in 1977. It was during this time that Al began learning to play upright bass. In

1976 Al got a job at Billy Fayard's Round Table on the Westbank with the house band called "The New Orleans

Levee Board".

This gig would prove to be the beginning of Al's Westbank music career which included many gigs at the Cellar Club,

Fast Eddie's, C's Lounge, The Suburban, The Flamingo, Mel's Villa, The Celebrity Club, Michelli's, and The Fat Cat.

In 1977 Al moved to the Westbank where he lived until 1981. In May 1979

Al got a gig with Dick Stabile's Orchestra at the Blue Room of the Fairmont Hotel. This was a major milestone in Al's

musical career. Having had some experience with big band music and jazz while attending UNO, this was his first

attempt at playing it at this high of a level. It was here that Al Arthur really honed his musical skills while backing up

such great artists as Mel Torme, Joe Williams, Billy Eckstine, Carol Channing, The Mills Brothers, Vic Damone, Jerry

Vale, John Gary, Patti Page and many more. He left the Blue Room in 1983 and joined "Janet Lynn & Ya Ya" playing

at the 1801 Club in Gretna.

From 1987 thru 1990, Al took side jobs on the Westbank and in the French Quarter. In 1990 Al joined a blues band at

the Old Absinthe Bar on Bourbon St. called "Bryan Lee & The Jump Street Five" Right after that in 1991, Bryan Lee

got a record deal with a label out of Canada called Justin Time Records. the bass player on Bryan's first 7 CD's. The

band also travelled a lot. They went to Brazil, Europe, Canada, Nashville, Memphis, Newport, Philadelphia, Chicago,

and Detroit. It was the traveling that ultimately led to Al's departure from the band in 1997. Since 1998 Al has worked

playing upright bass in jazz bands around town. In 2000, he recorded his first CD titled "Mantis" which consisted of

tunes he wrote and arranged.

He continues to freelance with bands playing upright bass, electric bass,

or guitar. He is currently playing on Bourbon St. with Jamil Sharif at the Maison Bourbon Jazz Club and doing

of 6, when his parents bought his oldest brother Russ, a drum set from Marrero's own "Big Johnny" Thomassie. In

1965, he began playing Country & Western music in a group with Anthony and Fedelis Verdin of Westwego. Mark

grew up on Keller Street where there were 4 bands practicing weekly in just the 600 block! Jake Chimento had a

group, Buddy Nolan, across the street had a rock group, Jerry & Billy Pekinto had guys jamming at their house and

Mark's brother Russ played drums for the Castillians. Then on West Drive, the Leblane brothers Henry & Tommy

were practicing too. All these guys were 5 to 15 years older than Mark and constantly forming new bands which

became his training ground. Mark's influences were the heavy-weights of the Westbank like Johnny Thomassie,

and down the coast from Gulfport to Charleston, South Carolina.

He returned to Westwego in 1978 and began a 22 year gig with the
